I teach sixth grade at a public school in Manhattan. This was actually my first year teaching. It was really difficult not to have more time with my first group of students in the building—being surrounded by laughing kids all day is what brings me joy in this career, not Excel spreadsheets and endless Zoom calls! However, as important as those real-life experiences are, no one in power is on the side of teachers or students. My group chats are exploding with articles about infections at summer camps and closures in other parts of the country. There is absolutely no configuration that makes a hybrid schedule feasible. There is no clear message from the city or state.
