It was Rebecca who oriented the whole thing around gender—she pointed out that the pandemic seemed to be reinscribing old norms, like, even in our situation, Morgan was rather compulsively chopping wood, and I was learning how to bake. (A pastime I’d evinced no previous interest in and which I dispensed with as soon as I returned to Manhattan.) And then the moviemaking itself became super gender normative, with Morgan handling most of the techy stuff and me doing the costume design. Very cliché.
Quarantine satire for sure. I mean, on one level, the film is an extended joke about how obsessed a certain locked-down demographic was with baking sourdough bread. I knew enough about the process to key in on the fact that the mother—the sourdough starter—needs constant care and feeding, which makes it a particularly good locus for obsession. The script kind of spun up from that. But whenever I write—whether for Vogue or in my screenwriting—I’m always looking for the thing behind the thing, if you know what I mean. In this case, the thing behind seemed to me to be this anxiety, in the early days of the pandemic when we really had no idea how long it would last, that COVID was ending the world as we’d known it—like, it was hard to find toilet paper, right?—and that we’d all have to become new people in a new world. That anxiety made its way into the character of Podcast Man, the apocalyptic voice in Morgan’s ear.
Maya Singer: Maven had reached out to Morgan’s reps to see if he and Rebecca wanted to be involved with the anthology; at that point, if I remember correctly, a few other quarantining couples, like Julianne Moore and Bart Freundlich and Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, had already confirmed. The Maven people knew my work and were receptive to the idea of my writing something—which I suspect Morgan and Rebecca proposed because they wanted to give me something to do. Those first few months of the pandemic, I was kind of just mooching around. Missing my boyfriend, giving myself reading assignments, taking long walks as the weather permitted. Work was slow, and I’m bad at leisure, as I recently wrote about for the magazine. And that’s the other way of explaining the origins of the film: me contemplating my sense of displacement and observing, via social media, the ways people were contriving to fill their suddenly very-free time. The first line of the movie—“I swear to God, my entire Instagram feed is sourdough porn”—is a verbatim quote from real life.
